Weekend roundup – beast from the east

Well, I’m not sure where to start on this one as like many of you in the UK the “Beast from the East” dropped in and caused a bit of havoc with my plans resulting in a long and cold week and not much of anything other than surviving taking place.

Snow days, no chance

Unlike nearly every other person I didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy any snow day’s not because my job is life and death like the emergency services but more due to the fact that unpaid leave would be crippling to the household. As expected our daughter’s school promptly followed suit with all other schools in the northeast leading to my wife having to take time off which

So the week consisted of 7 am starts to do the 15mile+ trip to work on country roads and a small stretch of dual carriageway. This was fairly terrifying in my little city car but taking it steady and planning ahead kept me on the road and out of a ditch…..

One thing that was worth the chaos was I managed to catch an amazing display of thundersnow on the way home one night on the dash cam.

Outside in the Arctic

I did make it outside for about an hour and a half this was just a quick check on the greenhouse to clear some snow off the roof put some seed out for the birds and scout for any damage.

I did try to do a couple of jobs inside the greenhouse but the temperature was around 2 degrees C but I soon gave up, what I was working on was the wiring for the irrigation and also running some wires on the roof for stringing up the tomatoes/cucumbers. This proved to difficult to do in the cold temps so ill come back to it when it warms up.

Potting up

One thing I did manage to do was to pot up 4 trays of x6 mixed chilli’s and Tom’s (24 plants of unknown variety) due to the mishap with the little one propping everything a few weeks earlier

I’m quite surprised with how well they are doing between the little sun we are having and the top up 50w LED grow light I got for £30

Ona side note

Normally a week like this would be a massive knock to my mental state, the lack of control, unknown and inability to get anything done because of this would normally make me incredibly restless and anxious, and I definitely feel that at times I could feel those stormy waters rising which I suppose leads to the next point rather well.

Resilience

This is somewhat of a new “mantra” to me but fits in with my ideology and direction in life, no I’m not a doomsday prepper, but I would like to have a few systems in place that mean I can withstand a sudden change in circumstances and you’ll probably see that change within this blog as the year continues, I’m not going off grid as much as I wish I had the land to do so, however, a few small changes could bring me some peace of mind.

Let’s hope the weather is better next week for us all
